GUJRANWALA, March 23: Police on Thursday booked 80 people and arrested a dozen of them on charges of violating Loudspeakers Act in Naushera Virkan. Reports said the accused were involved in sectarianism, using mosques’ loudspeakers for delivering provocative speeches and chanting slogans against each other.

A police party reached the spot and dispersed them to avert any untoward incident. Further raids are under way.

SHOT DEAD: An elderly man was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Sabzi Mandi area here on Thursday.

Reports said Mehr Muhammad Siddique was going to Rana Colony when some motorcyclists opened fire, killing him on the spot. The motive behind the murder could not be ascertained.

Police have registered a case and removed the body to DHQ hospital for autopsy. Middle exams: As many as 36,000 candidates will appear in the middle standard and primary school certificate annual examinations this year.

This was stated by a spokesman for the executive district officer (education) at a briefing here on Thursday.

He said some 8,100 candidates would appear in the middle standard examinations and 28,000 in the primary school certificate examinations. Some 30 centres had been set up for middle standard exams and 32 for primary school exams.

He said the middle exams would commence on April 1 and the primary on April 13. Roll number slips had already been issued to the candidates.

SUICIDE: A woman committed suicide by taking poisonous pills in Garjakh here on Thursday.

The woman took poison after a quarrel with her husband, Amanat. She died while being taken to hospital.

EXHUMATION: The body of a man was exhumed by medical team, led by a judicial magistrate, on the orders of the district and sessions judge on Thursday.

Reports said Abdul Ghaffor of Rata Road moved court and pleaded that his cousin Muhammad Aslam was murdered by his rivals but he was laid to rest by declaring it a natural death.

The judge ordered exhumation of the body and inducted medical team, comprising the DHQ hospital doctors. The team got samples from the body and sent those to Lahore for laboratory analysis.
