PESHAWAR: Tribute paid to Pushto writers

By Our Correspondent

PESHAWAR, March 23: Speakers at a seminar on Thursday paid tribute to Pushto writers Ghani Khan, Khan Abdul Wali Khan and Mohammad Ashraf Khan Maftoon. The Aalmi Pushto Congress held the seminar titled ‘Shareeka Dastoora’ in collaboration with the Ghani Khan Adabi and Saqafati Jirga and the cultural committee of the Peshawar Press Club.

University of Peshawar Pushto Academy Chairman, Dr Salma Shaheen, Aalmi Pushto Congress Chairman Prof Jahanzeb Niaz, Prof Azam Azam, Dr Sher Zaman Taizai and Muflis Durrani highlighted literary achievements of the writers in their papers.

Dr Taizai said Ghani Khan was a restless soul who strived throughout his life to know and understand the mystery of human existence.

“As he wanted to interpret and appreciate this strange enigma both emotionally and spiritually, he did not hesitate to evaluate it in every type of fine arts,” he said, adding that Ghani Khan was a true poet, dynamic philosopher, devoted mystic and charismatic painter and sculptor.

He said Ghani Khan was considered one of the greatest Pashto poets after Rehman Baba and Khushal Khan Khattak. His poetry gave the message of love for man-kind and beauty, Prof taizai said.

Professor Azam said Wali Khan’s writings were based on political history and served as a reflection of the past. He said Wali Khan’s book describing the struggle of his father Khan Abdul Ghafar Khan was a masterpiece.

Mr Durrani paid tribute to Ashraf Maftoon and said love lyrics, philosophical poems, humour, epics, nationalistic songs, elegies, epigrams, satire and, above all, frankness, were the main features of his poetic works.

Earlier, a 40-member delegation of the congress visited the graves of the writers.
