KARACHI, March 22: The visiting Deputy Head of the South Asia Group, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, London, John Yapp, met the City Naib Nazim, Nasreen Jalil, at her office on Wednesday. The Deputy Head of Mission at the British Deputy High Commission, Ron Rimmex, was also present there.
Talking to the visitors, the naib nazim said that the future of Karachi today was in safe hands.
She said the concerned departments were working round the clock for early completion of projects initiated by the city government for the city’s development.
Jalil said that with the completion of these projects, the city’s very infrastructure would improve significantly, which will help in building Karachi as the world’s modern city.
She pointed out that elected local government representatives of Karachi were quite confident about the city’s future and their basic objective was to promote justice and merit for greater social and economic uplift.
She referred to priority efforts being made by the city government for improved performance in the education, health and transport sectors besides improvement of water and sewerage systems, development of women and solving the community problems through community participation.
The naib nazim said work on the new master plan to meet future challenges of the city had started.
Informing the visitors about the historic City Council building, Jalil said it was constructed in 1930 and its foundation stone was laid by Lord Sandburst, the then Governor of Bombay. It was designed by James C Wyunes of Edinburgh.
She said the founder of Pakistan, Quaid-i-Azam Mohammed Ali Jinnah, had visited the council building on August 25, 1947 and thus it became Pakistan’s first municipal institution which was visited by the great Quaid.
She said the Quaid was presented the first welcome address on behalf of people of Karachi in this very council Hall.—APP
