KARACHI: Mother narrates ordeal after killing daughters

KARACHI, March 21: Except for brief bouts of hysterical fits, Nadia Kanwal was quite composed following her arrest at the Landhi police station on Monday midnight for throttling her two minor daughters with her bare hands at her Landhi house.
As admitted by her almost seven hours after killing eight-month-old Alja and 2-year-old Remsha, she did not cry.
Talking to Dawn at the Landhi police station, Syeda Nadia Kanwal, 21, said that she was under some type of spell, as no normal person could do what she had done.
According to her, she had completed her graduation in first class from the Sir Syed College Nazimabad in 2000. She was married to ASI Aslam four years back. She said that Aslam had divorced her some six months back.
“However, we were living together and we had planned Hallala. In matter of a few days, it was to take place, but suddenly this happened,” Nadia said.
“It was around Asr when I grabbed Alja and chocked her throat with my bare hands. Seeing this my elder daughter started crying ‘Mama, Mama’, I also grabbed her and did the same,” she added.
“I don’t know I should cry or laugh at myself,” she said, begging the SHO to send her to jail. “I deserve death for this,” she said.
She said it was because of her husband that she did not kill herself after killing her daughters, thinking that he might land into trouble.
However, police record showed that her husband had already landed into trouble when he was arrested driving a stolen vehicle some time back.
According to the SHO Landhi Malick Ishaq, the woman had returned all her relatives and didn’t bother calling even her parents. Her husband did come to the police station but left soon after without seeing his wife, police said.
A visit to the Landhi Police Station on Monday night showed the shortcomings of police in dealing such cases. The police station was without a woman constable to tackle Nadia. Though the SHO was apparently trying to make arrangements for the woman constable, it was in vain.
Nadia was sent to the woman police station late Monday night, the SHO said.
