Hoggard’s twin blow jolts India

MUMBAI, March 19: Swing bowler Matthew Hoggard grabbed two early wickets to put India under pressure in the third and final Test against England on Sunday.

Hoggard dismissed openers Virender Sehwag and Wasim Jaffer in the space of three fiery overs before India reached 89-3 at stumps on the second day in reply to England’s first-innings total of 400.

England were bowled out half-an-hour before tea after resuming on 272-3, with debutant Owais Shah scoring an impressive 88 and stand-in captain Andrew Flintoff 50 for his third successive half-century.

India then found the pace and bounce of the new-ball bowlers too hot to handle as Jaffer (11), Sehwag (six) and Sachin Tendulkar (one) fell in quick succession to leave their team wobbling on 28-3.

Skipper Rahul Dravid (37 not out) and Yuvraj Singh (32 not out) steadied the innings with an unfinished 61-run stand for the fourth wicket.

Hoggard, who bagged seven wickets in the drawn opening Test at Nagpur, again haunted India when he had the hard-hitting Sehwag caught by Shah at first slip off a rising delivery.

Hoggard’s extra bounce also led to Jaffer’s dismissal, caught down the leg-side by wicket-keeper Geraint Jones.

Fast bowler James Anderson, playing his first Test in more than a year, then sparked celebrations in England’s camp when he removed Tendulkar for one.

Tendulkar, playing on his home ground and making an Indian record 132nd Test appearance, spent 34 uncomfortable minutes at the crease before being caught behind off a loose drive.

The star batsman, without a half-century since his world-record 35th Test hundred against Sri Lanka in Delhi last December, looked out of form and took 13 balls to open his account.

Even Dravid, playing his 100th Test, found runs hard to come by against the England pace trio of Hoggard, Anderson and Flintoff but did well to keep his end intact for nearly a session.

Batting became easier only when slow bowlers were pressed into the attack. Yuvraj straight-drove spinner Shaun Udal for two successive fours during his 47-ball knock.

England — seeking to square the series — earlier managed to post a healthy total despite losing their last seven wickets for 74, thanks to Flintoff and Shah.

Shah, who retired hurt on Saturday on 50 due to cramps in his hands, added 38 more runs before falling to a brilliant one-handed catch by Dravid at lone slip off Harbhajan Singh. He struck one six and 13 fours.

Seamers Shanthakumaran Sreesanth and Munaf Patel, and off-spinner Harbhajan shared six of the seven England wickets that fell on Sunday.

India let off Flintoff twice and Shah once, but Sreesanth (4-70), Harbhajan (3-89) and Patel (2-81) kept trying to keep their team in the contest.

Flintoff was on 29 when dropped off successive balls from Patel, first by Sehwag at second slip and then by Anil Kumble at gully. Shah got a life on 84 when Dravid failed to latch on to a catch off Harbhajan.

Leg-spinner Kumble claimed the prize wicket of Flintoff, caught at deep mid-wicket by Tendulkar while trying a big shot. The England captain, who made 70 and 51 in the second Test at Mohali, smashed three sixes and six fours.

Flintoff had added 84 for the fourth wicket with Paul Collingwood (31).
