KARACHI: Opposition united for democracy: leaders

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, March 18: Opposition parties are striving to unite people and channel their energy to create a healthy and strong democratic society in the country so that fear of the people could deter generals in future from trampling democracy and establishing dictatorship.

Almost all speakers criticised the bulldozing of old Jumma Goth in Karachi by the city government despite a consensus resolution of the Sindh Assembly against demolishing of old goths. They termed the action of the city government as victimisation.

This was stated by leader of the Opposition in Sindh Assembly Nisar Ahmad Khuhro while addressing a reception organized by the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam–F at a local hotel on Saturday for newly elected Senator Dr Khalid Mehmood Soomro, who is also Secretary General of the MMA– Sindh chapter.

Mr Khuhro said the government had failed to create an order in society with tolerance for each other. However, the PPP on its part had played its role by sending a woman from the minority community to the Senate.

He expressed pleasure that opposition parties were able to get back the seat of late Maulana Shah Ahmad Noorani by getting Dr Khalid Mehmood Soomro elected.

Dr Soomro referred to the sugar crisis and of-and-on increasing oil prices and said the opposition had protested over the government attitude.

Qari Muhammad Usman, who hosted the reception, said a joint opposition could pave the way to elect and return true representatives of people to the assemblies and restore democratic order in the country.

Qari Sher Afzal said the country could be rid of dictatorship only if the opposition’s unity turned into a practical struggle.

Others who spoke on this occasion included Mufti Abrar Sultan, Muhammad Yunus Barai, Maulana Qari Allahdad, Maulana Omar Sadiq, Hashim Siddiqui, Maulana Abdul Karim Abid, Allama Hasan Turabi, Maulana Khan Muhammad Rabbani and Allama Muhammad Yusuf Qasuri.
