Police official arrested on smuggling charges

PESHAWAR, March 16: A police official and his alleged accomplice were arrested at Zangali checkpoint on Kohat Road on Thursday on charges of smuggling arms. In a raid, police seized 855 bottles of liquor from a distillery in a house in Javed Town of the Gulbahar area and arrested one person.

Acting on information about an attempt to smuggle arms and ammunition from the semi-autonomous region of Dara Adamkhel to Punjab, a police team was constituted.

At Zangali police checkpost, the team signalled a car to stop and during inspection found nine Kalashnikov assault rifles, 40 pistols, two repeater guns, 15 magazines and 6,400 bullets of different calibres.

The police arrested Muazullah, a resident of Charsadda district, and Mohammad Ayaz, a resident of Matani locality.

Official sources said that Mohammad Ayaz was a reader to the superintendent of police at Police Headquarters in the provincial metropolis.

LIQUOR SEIZED: In the raid on the Javed Town house on Thursday, Gulbahar police found the liquor factory. The alleged owner, Shamsul Haq, was arrested.

The police seized 855 bottles of liquor and packing material.

ARREST: The city police during a special operation against outlaws netted 16 outlaws and seized one Kalashnikov assault rifle, two guns, 11 pistols and 1,939 bullets of different calibres, said press release.

DRIVE: Police in an anti-obscenity campaign seized a large quantity of X-rated material and arrested 23 people.

All police stations falling under the jurisdiction of the Capital City Police launched the campaign and seized X-rated CDs from video shops and mini-cinema houses and arrested 23 people.
