SIALKOT, March 16: The 136-foot long wooden bridge over Tavi collapsed on Thursday within 10 days of repair due to spate in the river as a result of rain. The bridge is the only link between 85 villages of Bajwat and the rest of the district.

The officials concerned told newsmen that repair of the bridge could not be started due to rise in the water level. The water level might come down in three or four days enabling them to repair it, they added.

The area falls in the constituency of National Assembly Speaker Ameer Husain.

When contacted, district nazim Akmal Cheema said a probe had been ordered into collapse of the bridge.

He said he had ordered repair of the bridge as soon as possible.

STRIKE: The traders of wheat market observed a complete strike for the second successive day on Thursday against seven thefts in shops in a night.

The protesters took out a procession from the market which ended at Allama Iqbal Chowk after passing through city’s main bazaars. They were holding banners and placards and chanting anti-police slogans.

Later, traders leaders told newsmen that the thieves took away cash and valuables worth Rs500,000 from the shops which were located a few yards from the Hajipura police station.

The incidents created panic and a sense of insecurity among the local traders, they added.
