NAWABSHAH, March 15: A heavy contingent of police, acting on information that Al-Qaeda’s former operative Amjad Farooqui’s accomplices were hiding in the city, conducted a raid on a house in the city on Wednesday.
Sources told Dawn that police received a call from a person identifying himself as Brigadier Tariq that some accomplices of Amjad Farooq were hiding in the house of Ms Shahzadi in the red-light area.
A police team, headed by TPO Aijaz Tareen, surrounded the area and arrested some suspects in the raid.
Sources said that information was received regarding the hideout of underworld don Rehmat Dekait upon which police raided.
Police found no clue of any suspected terrorist from the house after investigations.
It may be mentioned that Amjad Farooqui was lynchpin of the Al-Qaeda network in Pakistan.
He was also involved in the attack on President Musharraf’s convoy and kidnapping-murder of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl in Karachi in early 2002.
Amjad Farooqui was killed on September 25, 2004, by security forces in Nawabshah.
DEATH SENTENCE: The first additional district and sessions judge, Amjad Ali Qazi, on Tuesday awarded capital punishment to Karim Dad for killing his sister-in-law.
