More steps for industry in budget

GUJRANWALA, March 15: Federal Commerce Minister Humayun Akhtar Khan has appreciated the quality products of Gujranwala and said the industries would help enhance foreign exchange.

Speaking at a ‘made in Gujranwala’ exhibition-related ceremony at a local hotel here on Wednesday, he suggested that retail markets of these products should be set up at union council level.

He assured the participants that the government would take more steps for promoting national industry during the next budget. He said display centres would be constructed in the city, besides industrial estates.

Earlier, Gujranwala Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Akhlaq Ahmad Butt and other office-bearers welcomed the minister and apprised him of problems being faced by the businessmen.

Provincial information secretary Taimur Azmat Usman and MMA chief Qazi Husain Ahmad also visited the exhibition of industrial products and appreciated the quality work.

PROTEST: Residents of Nizamabad have protested against the city district government demanding action against factory owners for damaging sewerage.

At a meeting held on Wednesday, councillors and other citizens said District Nazim Fiaz Ahmad Chattha got constructed sewerage in December 2004 at a cost of Rs22.2 million while factory owners had allegedly diverted their contaminated water to sewerage, choking sewer lines.

SLAIN: A lawyer was killed by his brother-in-law over a property dispute here on Wednesday.

Nadim Abbas Alvi was in his house when accused Ghulam Rasool came there and shot him dead.

Meanwhile, District Bar Association president Ilyas Husain Rehan announced that the DBA would observe strike on Thursday (today).

Police have registered a case and are investigating.
