Power projects: report clarified

Published March 16, 2006

ISLAMABAD, March 15: The Private Power and Infrastructure Board (PPIB) has issued Letters of Interest for setting up power projects of 3,800 mw capacity, and not of 1,550 mw capacity as stated in a report published in Dawn on Wednesday. The PPIB said that coal-fired power projects of 1,550 mw capacity would be built by the private sector and projects of 1,000 mw were in the feasibility study stage.

Similarly, UAE-based companies were investing $535 million, and not $460 million, to set up four projects of about 500 mw accumulated capacity.

The board said that upfront tariff would not be negotiable. However, if the pre-determined tariff was not acceptable to investors, they might file a petition with Nepra for increase. It said the upfront tariff had specified indexation over the life of the project.
