Call to expedite port projects

Published March 16, 2006

KARACHI, March 15: Minister for Ports and Shipping Babar Khan Ghouri on Wednesday emphasized the need for fast implementation of the development projects at Port Qasim.

During a review of the on-going development projects at Port Qasim, the minister observed that the accelerated pace of development at country’s ports was evident from the fact that the ports were contributing significantly to the national exchequer.

He stressed the need for deepening of the approach channel as greater volume of boxed cargo had warranted accommodating large size vessels to meet the economies of scale. Due to rapid industrialization in the Port Qasim industrial estate, he said that presently 125 units were operational and 27 units were under construction, and about 70 were in the pipeline.
