Loans for large dams opposed

Bureau Report

HYDERABAD, March 14: Political leaders and water experts on Tuesday called upon international financial institutions not to advance loans to Pakistan for construction of big dams.

They were speaking at a symposium organized by the Sindh National Council to mark the International Day against big dams at the press club here on Tuesday.

They rejected Kalabagh and others dams on the Indus River on the grounds that they were extremely harmful to economy and environment.

Awami Tehrik leader Abrar Qazi said that taking refuge behind shortage of water, the government wanted to construct big dams on the Indus River for the benefit of Punjab.
