KARACHI: Steps taken to ensure regular water supply
By Our Staff Reporter
KARACHI, March 14: The Karachi Water and Sewerage Board has taken measures to ensure uninterrupted supply of water to various city localities. The areas, which were earlier getting water from the Hub Dam, have now been linked to the Indus source so that in case of fall in water level at the Hub Dam, uninterrupted supply could be ensured throughout the city, KWSB sources said.
“Shortly after completing the interconnection work, we have started supplying 13 mdg to the sprawling townships of Orangi, Baldia, Shershah, SITE (both residential and industrial) areas, etc., to augment their water supply position,” sources in the KWSB said.
Initially, 13 mgd from Indus source – eight mgd from Board Office pumping station and five mgd from the Ajmair Nagri pumping station – was being diverted to the localities hooked to the Hub source, but the supply could be increased gradually in case supply from the Hub source declines further, the sources added.
At present, the localities hooked to the Hub source are being supplied 60 mgd from Hub dam and 13 from the Indus source, the sources maintained.
To another query, the sources said that water level in the Hub dam had reached 285 RL (Reservoir Level) as against 290 RL and supply from the source becomes unmanageable once the level reaches 280 RL and comes to a halt upon touching its dead storage level i.e. 276RL.
They were, however, optimistic that the localities hooked to the Hub source would continue to get 60 mgd from Hub dam reservoir till May, saying that water level at Hub reservoir would be reviewed the same month to decide how much water could be fetched from it.
Asked whether the localities hooked to the Hub dam source might face water crisis once the Hub dam reservoir goes dry and supply from it comes to a halt, the sources replied in the negative, saying now there were no chances of those localities facing any water crisis.
ILLEGAL CONNECTION: A considerable quantity of water was wasted from a 24-inch pipeline, near Safari Park, when some anti-social elements made an attempt to get illegal connections from the line after making holes in it.
Sources in the KWSB said though some people made an attempt to get unauthorized connections from the 24-inch pipeline with the help of a private plumber, they could not succeed owing to pressure of water. However, a considerable quantity of water was wasted from the holes which they had made in the pipeline for getting unauthorised connections.
The holes have been plugged and the water shortage created in some adjacent localities had been overcome by rescheduling their supply timings, they claimed.
