KARACHI: Road safety education programme begins


KARACHI, March 14: The fourth road safety education and teacher training programme commenced at the transport and communication department of the city government, Civic Centre on Tuesday.

Speaking on the occasion, EDO Transport and Communication Mohammad Athar said that teachers and parents could play an important role in educating children on road safety, adding that 25 per cent of road mishaps victims were children.

The two-day programme is aimed at creating traffic awareness among children and the general public to minimize road mishap ratio, he added.

He said that most of the citizens lacked road sense and around 54 per cent pedestrians fall prey to road mishaps every year.

The ADO transport and communication department said that the transport and communication department would also make arrangements to create awareness on traffic laws and road safety codes among the school children.

He said that teachers would be encouraged to take part in such programmes and impart road safety education to children. He said that in this regard, a 20-minute documentary film had been made, which would be shown at schools of various towns. He said guide books had been provided to the participants of the programme.

The ADO said that around 36 teachers from almost all the towns including Baldia, Bin Qasim, Orangi, SITE, Landhi, Liaquatabad, North Karachi, North Nazimabad, and Shah Faisal town had participated in the programme. DSP Traffic Abbas Ali Shah also spoke.—PPI
