KARACHI, March 11: The vice-chancellor and faculty members of Karachi University on Saturday paid homage to the services of late renowned scientist Dr Nasima M Tirmizi at a meeting.
The meeting was organized at the Marine Reference Collection and Resources Centre of KU to mark the first death anniversary of the scientist, who was also the founder director of the centre.
A corner of the MRCRC’s museum-cum-library was also named after her and a good number of books and scientific literatures, which were the property of Dr Tirmizi, were also transferred to the library.
KU Vice-Chancellor Pirzada Qasim lauded the services of the late scientist, who had also served the varsity’s dean of science faculty.
He said Dr Tirmizi, belonging to a family with an educational and literary background, had been a competent and talented teacher and scientist, and was equally recognized both within and outside the country.
Referring to the wishes of the MRCRC staff that the museum library should be named after Dr Nasima M Tirmizi, the VC said that a proposal could be placed before the statutory body of the university for the purpose.
Highlighting the role of Dr Tirmizi in the establishment of the KU Marine Centre and her other scientific endeavours, Dr Quddusi Kazmi said as a woman scientist, her strength existed in the biological, agricultural and environmental sciences.
She had dedicated her life toserve the MRCRC, which now contained the largest repository of the Arabian Sea fauna, she added.
In the meantime, the Educational Forum of Karachi University launched the webpage of its journal on basic and applied sciences at a ceremony. Dr Anwar-ul-Haq, Director of Khan Research Lab, Islamabad, was the guest of honour.
