BOGRA (Bangladesh), March 10: Muttiah Muralitharan became only the second bowler to take 600 Test wickets as Sri Lanka closed in on a win in the second and final Test against Bangladesh here on Friday.
Sri Lanka, looking to wrap the series 2-0 after winning the opening Test in Chittagong by eight wickets, were 77 without loss on the third day after being set a 120-run target by the home side.
Left-handers Upul Tharanga (48) and Michael Vandort (22) were the not out batsmen after Sri Lanka, who gained an 82-run first innings lead, dismissed Bangladesh for 201 in their second innings.
Muralitharan, the top-ranked bowler according to the latest ICC rankings, took a wicket each in the first two sessions to get to the milestone in his 101st Test.
Muralitharan’s first victim was left-hander Shahriar Nafees (six). He got to the milestone when Khaled Mashud (12) holed out to Lasith Malinga at deep square-leg.
In the second session, other spinner Malinga Bandara dismissed Mohammad Ashraful (13) and Mushfiqur Rahim (zero) in the same over.
The spinners came into action after pacemen Malinga and Dilhara Fernando bagged a wicket each in the morning session.
Nafees Iqbal (two) was caught behind by Kumar Sangakkara as he failed to negotiate a Malinga bouncer while his opening partner Javed Omar (13) edged a ball from Fernando down the leg to the wicketkeeper.
The pace duo also helped remove the lower-order to finish with identical figures of 3-51.
Captain Habibul Bashar (73) and Mohammad Rafique (64) were the only ones to offer resistence. Bashar slammed nine fours off 103 balls while Rafique smashed six fours and three sixes off 78 balls.
Earlier, Sri Lanka could add only 14 runs to their overnight 302-8 as paceman Shahadat Hossain grabbed both wickets to finish with his maiden five-wicket haul.
After removing tail-ender Malinga (12), he had Tharanga (165) caught behind by Mashud to finish with 5-86.
