BAGHDAD, March 10: The US ambassador to Iraq has called for a special conference of Iraqi politicians to break a stalemate on forming a coalition government, as top US officials warned of the civil war threat posed by sectarian violence.
Zalmay Khalilzad, who has been meeting with representatives from all factions, suggested top Iraqi politicians hold a conference, “possibly away from Baghdad, even away from Iraq”, once they have agreed on the name of the next prime minister and that parliament has met, he told Time magazine.
Politicians Thursday agreed to summon the new parliament on March 19, just over three months after it was elected, but factions remain deeply divided over who should serve as prime minister.—AFP
