Protection for journalist demanded

By Our Correspondent

DADU, March 9: Local journalists at a meeting have condemned the warnings allegedly issued to the district correspondent of Dawn, Qurban Ali Khushik, by a minister.

The meeting, presided over by Wali Mohammad Chandio, appealed to President Gen Pervez Musharraf, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court to provide justice and protection to the correspondent.

The meeting warned of launching a struggle if action was not taken.

The People’s Party Parliamentarians at a meeting held at its district office unanimously adopted a resolution criticizing the minister for issuing threats to the journalist.

The party observed that the journalist was highlighting genuine issues of the district.

NGOs of village Shadabad and Jordan and political and social workers have demanded an impartial inquiry into the matter and protection for the journalist.
