Soccer: Zakir earns Wapda a place in last eight

By Our Sports Reporter

KARACHI, March 7: An early first half strike by Zakir Hussain was enough to propel Wapda into the quarterfinal when they beat Lyari Brothers 1-0 in the All Pakistan Shaheed-e-Millat Khan Liaquat Ali Khan football tournament on Tuesday.

In another match Habib Bank were held to a 2-2 draw by Gwadar Port which enabled the latter to become group champion goal difference.

Wapda’s match-winner came in the 12th minute of the first half. Lyari Brothers had themselves to blame for the defeat as they failed to convert a penalty kick in the 62nd minute when Nasir Ismail missed from the spot.

The bankers took the lead in the 27th minute when Habib Ghulam latched on to a pass from Amjad Yousuf to open the scoring. There was no further scoring in the first half.

Gwadar Port’s Mohammad Asif restored parity in the 80th minute but the bankers just took one minute to take the lead for the second time when Amjad Yousuf struck.

With time running out Gwadar Port laid siege of the bankers goal and were rewarded in the 87th minute through Masood Ali who scored from the spot kick.

Wednesday’s fixture: Afghan Club, Chaman, v Hazara Mohammadan 4pm.
