KARACHI: Nazim’s call for high standard of construction

KARACHI, March 1: The City Nazim, Syed Mustafa Kamal, has said that flyovers and underpasses being constructed in the city must meet international standards.

He said care should also be taken for providing emergency exits in under-passes for protection against any possible accidents.

He was talking to consultants, contractors and people who had gathered during his visit to the under-construction Azizabad and Liaquatabad underpasses on Tuesday night.

DCO Karachi Fazalur Rehman, MD Water Board Brig Iftekhar Hyder, EDO Works and Services were also present on the occasion.

The city nazim directed the DCO to review these projects, remove existing technical defects immediately and submit a report to him within 48 hours.

He directed that at points where work continued during the night, the traffic police should remain present.

He especially directed the consultant and contractors present there to ensure such engineering designing as could provide maximum facilities to people.

The nazim directed that consultant, contractors and staff of the Water Board should remain present on site round the clock and staff detail should be provided to his office for contacting them when needed. He said he would again visit the projects after two days.

He directed the staff of Water Board and Works department to immediately put covers on open manholes and remove steel bars from roadsides.

Meanwhile, the City Nazim, Syed Mustafa Kamal, has said the outdated sewerage system in the city was not only a cause of worry for Karachiites, but was a big hurdle in the way of carrying out development work as well.

Addressing the Sindh Bar Association on Wednesday, the nazim said it was the reason he had included water and sewerage system among his top priorities.

He said that there was 90 per cent corruption in lifting of garbage and he had decided to privatize the system to get rid of the menace.—APP
