KARACHI, March 1: In the wake of a road accident involving a student of his institution, the principal of Government D J Science College on Wednesday urged the city nazim to issue orders for measures to minimize the chances of accidents on Dr Ziauddin Ahmed Road.

According to the said college’s principal, Prof Ravi Shankar, a student of his college on bike was hit by a car near the college campus on Dr Ziauddin Ahmed Road.

The student received severe fractures in the leg and shoulder and was rushed to hospital, he said, adding that later, the student’s parents shifted him to some private clinic, probably for surgery.

After implementation of the city government’s plan to make I I Chundrigar Road a bus free zone from February, commuters have since then been facing enormous hardships.

The situation of vehicular traffic can be termed critical due to congestion and clogging of transport and undisciplined driving since Feb 20 when the new traffic plan was implemented, said a couple of senior students and teachers of the D J College.

Under the plan, the load of public transport had been diverted from the I I Chundrigar Road to the M A Jinnah Road.

As per route designed by the city government, all buses, minibuses and coaches coming towards Shaheen Complex intersection for onward journey to the Merewether Tower through the I I Chundrigar Road are diverted to the Dr Ziauddin Ahmed Road to hit M A Jinnah Road at the Light House traffic signal, for Tower.

Prof Ravi said the college had written to high-ups prior to implementation of the traffic plan in question drawing their attention towards the traffic flow and accidents taking place in the college vicinity.

Two buildings of the college are separated by a road and students have to cross the road many times during a day for academic purposes, he said.

“We wrote repeatedly to the city government, requesting for construction of a subway near the college, but there is nothing on ground. Unfortunately, a student was hurt in a road accident on Wednesday morning at around 8.15am, which has once again raised concern among faculty members and students.

Reviewing the traffic situation in our vicinity on Wednesday, a petition was sent again to the city nazim on fax, copies of were also sent to other related quarters as well, suggesting for erection of a speed-breaker and construction of subway on emergent basis, Dr Ravi said.
