Warne good but Gupte best leg-spinner ever: Sobers

SYDNEY, Feb 28: Indian bowling legend Subhash Gupte and not Shane Warne is greatest leg-spinner ever to take the field believes legendary West Indies cricket all-rounder Gary Sobers.

“Warne’s a great bowler but best leg-spinner I’ve ever seen is still (Subhash) Gupte. He could do things that I still don’t believe all these years later,” Sobers told the Australian.

Gupte, who played 36 Tests between 1951 and 1961 aad took 149 wickets, died in 2002 in Trinidad after spending a major part of his life there following his marriage to a local girl.

Sobers rated him higher than Warne despite the fact that Aussie was among the five, including Sobers, who were named cricketers of the century by Wisden magazine.

Sobers was also not impressed with Ricky Ponting led Australian team saying the World Champions were good but not the best that cricket has ever seen.

“I don’t think they would have even won a single Test against Clive Lloyd’s (West Indian) team, to tell you the truth,” he said.

“Look at how the Aussies struggled against Harmison in England. What would they have done against an attack with Michael Holding, Joel Garner, Colin Croft, Andy Roberts, Malcolm Marshall” he added.—PPI
