KARACHI, Feb 28: Women athletes excelled on the second day of the 40th National Athletics championship at National Sports Training and Coaching Centre on Monday night.
Humaira Akmal stole the limelight when she shattered the national pole vault record clearing a height of 2.40 metres. The record (2.35 metres) was held by Ghazala Sardar which she had set in the national meet at Lahore two years back.
Her team-mate Fouzia Aurangzeb also came out with flying colours and became first athlete to clinch double.
After crowning glory in the 400 metres hurdles a day earlier, she stand tall by adding 100 metres hurdles gold to her tally. She timed 15.7 sec. Wapda’s Nadia Nazir took the silver and Army’s Tasneem Akhtar bronze.
In all, 14 finals — eight in men and six in women — were decided on the second day.
The soldiers who the men medal table with 4-3-3 on the opening day, continued their domination adding six gold, two silver and four bronze.
They picked up gold in shot put, 200 metres, 400 metres hurdles, pole vault, 4 x 100 metres relay and 3000 metres steeplechase. The remaining two gold went to Wapda.
Last year’s runners up, Pakistan Steel who secured two golds on the first day, added four more to their tally to lead the medal table with 6-3-0. Defending champion, Wapda are trailing second with 4-7-6.
