Remand of accused in desecration case extended
SUKKUR, Feb 27: The anti-terrorism court-II, Sukkur, on Monday remanded Irfan, arrested on the charge of desecrating the Holy Quran, in police custody for two more days.
The accused was produced in the court amid tight security.
According to sources, police also arrested Suhail Pathan in the case and shifted him to some undisclosed place. They said raids were continuing to arrest other suspects.
The court also extended the remanded of 23 people, including children, allegedly involved in torching of two churches in Sukkur and causing damage to other Christian properties following the desecration of the Holy Quran, by two days. Relatives of the accused were also present.
The accused were shifted to the Sukkur Central Jail-II.
Meanwhile, leaders of different political and religious parties, including Maulana Abdul Haq Mahar of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam, Hizbullah Jakhro of the Jamaat-i-Islami and Nazir Soomro of the Sindh Taraqqi Pasand Party, met Sukkur DIGP Syed Zulfiqar Shah at his office.
They told the police officer that most of the youth arrested following the torching of the churches were innocent and had been falsely implicated in the case by police.
They alleged that police had failed to stop miscreants from damaging Christian properties and later arrested innocent people to cover their inefficiency.
The DIGP assured the delegation that innocent people would be released and any police official found guilty of negligence would be taken to task.
BOOKED: Four people were booked by police following the murder of a police constable of the A-section police station here on Sunday night.
On a complaint of Abdul Rahim Korai, brother of deceased police constable Mohammad Arib Korai, the B- section police registered a case against Gul Bahar Marfani, Koro Marfani and two other people.
The complainant said the accused were at odds with his brother over a quarter.
ARREST: Some two dozen Shar tribesmen were arrested by the police, after a car snatching incident in Baloch colony, Daharki on Monday.
Shaukat Panhyar, an employee of Exxon Chemical company, was on way home.
A group of armed bandits intercepted him and snatched his car on gun point and fled.
The police along with the villagers chased the bandits and an encounter took place between the outlaws and the police, after which the bandits managed to escape along with the snatched car.
Later, police raided the village and recovered a jeep, which was earlier snatched from a contractor working over Reni canal project, eight days back.
Police also arrested two dozen people from Shar tribe including, Ghafoor Shar, Hanif Shar, Tariq Shar, Faiz Pitafi, Sirajuddin Shar and others.
