GUJRANWALA, Feb 25: The Anti-Terrorism Court No 1 sent 49 activists of religious parties to jail on judicial remand here on Saturday.

Judge Mujahid Mustaqim directed the Kamoki police to submit chargesheets in court after completing the investigation.

The police had arrested them for taking out a protest rally against publication of blasphemous cartoons by Denmark and other European countries. They were also accused of blocking the GT Road and burning effigies and used tyres a few days back.

The judge adjourned the case till March 11.

LOOTED: Three masked bandits on Saturday looted the house of a landlord and decamped with jewellery worth Rs1.2 million, Rs2,000 in cash and mobile phones in Sethi Colony, Rahwali.

Reports said that armed dacoits barged into Sahibzada Muazzam Ali’s house, held inmates hostage and locked them in a room. Later, intruders collected jewellery, cash and cell phones and escaped by their car.

Cantonment police have registered a case against the accused.

RALLY: Activists of the Wapda Hydro Electric Central Labour Union held a protest rally against government’s privatisation policy and publication of blasphemous cartoons here on Saturday.

The rally, led by union secretary-general Khursheed Ahmad Khan, started from the main office and terminated at Bakhtiar Labour Hall on GT Road. The protesters were carrying banners and placards inscribed with slogans against the privatisation policy and cartoons.

Speaking on the occasion, Khursheed Ahmed and regional leaders Muhammad Iqbal Dar, Haji Sadiq Ali and Mian Ataur Rehman called upon the government to accept longstanding demands of workers with regard to restoration of their selection grades and recruitment of their sons.

They also condemned the attitude of European countries towards the Muslims.

ADJOURNED: The Anti-Terrorism Court No 1 adjourned the Sialkot jail case till March 4 as witnesses summoned for evidence could not turn up in court here on Saturday.

The judge re-issued the summons against three more witnesses for recording of their statements on the next hearing date.

SUSPENDED: Around 20 women sanitary workers and five sanitary supervisors have been suspended from service by Qila Dedar Singh Town administration for absence from duties.

They were also served show-cause notices here on Saturday.

Town Nazim Mian Tariq Mahmood received complaints that women sanitary workers, recruited on the recommendation of nazims and naib nazims a few years ago, were getting salaries without performing duties. While sanitary supervisors also failed to revamp the cleanliness system.

The town nazim visited various localities along with his staff and found them missing from their duties.

KILLS SISTER: A man shot dead his newly-wed sister on Jinnah Road here on Saturday.

Reports said the deceased had contracted love marriage with one Muhammad Jamil settled in Dubai a few days ago. On Saturday, Nadim Shahzad opened fire on his sister when she was present in the house. She died on the spot.
