Pakistan shuttlers finish seventh

ISLAMABAD, Feb 24: The Pakistan team which took part in the Thomas Cup preliminaries at Jaipur from Feb 15 to 19 finished seventh.

Thirteen teams from Asia took part in the competition with Pakistan in Group A along with Malaysia, Iran and Nepal.

The national shuttle team comprised Wajid Ali, Omar Zeeshan, Ahsan Qamar, Rizwan Azam, M. Attique, Ali Yar Beg and Rana Rizwan Shabber.

Pakistan defeated Nepal and Iran in their pool but lost to Malaysia.

In the second round the side went down to Thailand.

In the Uber Cup, the Pakistan side comprising Ayesha Akram, Asma Butt, Uzma Butt, Sara Khan, Saima Manzoor, Farzana Saleem and Farzana Shaheen and Zahida Ali lost all its matches.

The Pakistanis were bracketed with Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore and India, sides much superior in rankings.

Malaysia bt Pakistan 5-0: Lee Chong Wei bt Wajid Ali 21-15, 21- 9, Mohd Hashim bt Zeeshan Omar 21-7, 21-15, Woon Fui bt Ahsan Qamar 21-13, 21-11. Doubles: Chan Ming-Koo Kiet bt Rizwan Azam-Attique 21-9, 21-6, Woon Fui-Mohd Tazari bt Rizwan Rana-Ali Yar Beg 21-8, 21-5.

Thailand bt Pakistan 3-0 (second round): Ponsana Bonsak bt Wajid Ali, 21-7, 20-22, 21-7, Sapkul Poompat bt Zeeshan Omar 21-8, 21- 18. Doubles: Prapakamol Sudket-Negemsrisuk Patapol bt Rizwan Azam- Attique 21-14, 21-14.
