Horse-racing: Aie Bahar should maintain winning run

By Anwar Zuberi

KARACHI, Feb 21: Shah Mardan Shah Pir Pagara’s five-year-old mare, Aie Bahar, is poised to maintain her winning run when the Gymkhana race meeting takes place at the Karachi Racecourse on Wednesday.

Having emerged victorious in two previous outings with riding boy Zaki Zakir in the saddle, she is drawn in the six furlongs fifth race of the programme. She has been trained by Mumtaz Ali.

Her triumph by a wide margin of 12 lengths on last Wednesday is an indication that she was in good form and should once again cross the finishing post ahead of her rivals.

With seven contenders vying for honours, she should be chased by Lucky Step and Blue Breeze for places.

The race was originally scheduled to take place on Feb 19 but was cancelled at the last moment by the KRC to avoid clash with the last ODI between Pakistan and India.

The KRC has released revised handicaps for the meeting after cancelling the previous one.

A card of eight races, six going over a distance of five furlongs and the rest to six furlongs, has been chalked out for the day’s programme. The first race begins at 1.00pm.

Drawn in a pack of 11 runners, six-year-old Raka Poshi, is fancied to land the opener. He was ridden home by half a length by Ghous Bux in the previous outing on Jan 29.

Among other contenders, filly Jet Zone and bay horse Super Time enjoy an edge for securing second and third places.

Azam The Great, a five-year-old bay horse, is fancied to pick up spoils in the following race. He should be chased by Lucky Step having content with second slot in the last meeting and Desperado.

Bay colt, Powerful Gambler, should make amends for its last week loss by picking up the third race. Eager Saint and Al Jarrar should battle it out for the following two places.

The six furlongs fourth race restricted for Pakistani horses in class V1 should see chestnut Bilal Choice winning top honours. Silver City and Scarface look set for places.

Five-year-old bay mare, First Shot, owned by Adnan Azam Khan, should grab the sixth race.

The last two races having strongest field of 18 contestants should end in a blaze of glory of filly Eswarah and colt Victory Symbol.
