ROTTERDAM: Britain’s 230th-ranked Arvind Parmar stunned Thai Paradorn Srichaphan, saving three match points to fight into the second round of the 765,000-euro Rotterdam Open Tuesday.
The battling 7-6 (7/3), 5-7, 7-6 (9/7) win from the 27-year-old marked the first victory at ATP level for the 27-year-old Parmar since beating Xavier Malisse at Nottingham in June, 2004.
The unheralded Briton saved three match points in the final tiebreaker, sweeping up the key victory as the stuttering Thai couldn’t handle a service winner after more than two and a half hours.
Parmar came into the field as a lucky loser sitting on the top place in the draw after Rafael Nadal withdrew with a thigh injury at the last moment.
The Briton’s last appearance in a main draw was against Andy Roddick - also as a lucky loser - in the first round of the 2004 Thailand Open.
Parmar has played in only two Challenger events so far this season, in Wrexham, England and Bergamo, Italy, losing both times in the first round.
He was competing in his 41st ATP-level matches in ten years on the circuit.
Parmar joins fellow Briton Greg Rusedski in the second round, with Tim Henman set to play his first match Wednesday against fourth seed Thomas Johansson.
