Attack on churches condemned

By Our Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Feb 21: Pakistan People’s Party Chairperson Benazir Bhutto has condemned the burning of two churches in Sukkur and demanded a judicial probe into the incident, punishment to the culprits and compensation to the victims.

In a statement issued here on Tuesday, Ms Bhutto said it was most disturbing that the violence against the minority community was increasing day by day while the regime claiming enlightened moderation took no action.

“The Sukker incident was not the first of its kind. In November last frenzied mob attacked churches and schools in Sangla Hills. The latest incident is an ominous indicator of the increasing atmosphere of bigotry and intolerance in the country under Musharraf dictatorship,” she said.

The former prime minister said she was perturbed over reports that law-enforcement agencies stood silent and watched the frenzy continue.
