Polo: Godara’s ten goals go in vain

By Our Sports Correspondent

LAHORE, Feb 19: A fine performance by Indian Dhruvpal Godara, who struck all ten goals for Al Khan went in vain as six goals by Argentinean Guillermo Cuitino and four by Asif Tiwana helped Diamond Paints annex the Punjab Cup polo on Sunday.

The winners who had a 1 ½-goal handicap, won 12 1/2-10.

Diamond Paints led the first chukker (5 1/2-3) in which seven goals were scored.

Cuitino scored two, converting 40 and 60- yard penalty hits.

Asif also opened his account cashing in on a 40 yard penalty while Ahmed Ali Tiwana chipped in with a field goal.

Godara scored three capitalizing a 60,30 and spot penalty to give a tough fight by Al Khan.

On the rampage, Godara added three more in second chukker but the winners also added two through Cuitino to maintain the lead, by virtue of handicap advantage (7 1/2-6).

The goal scoring riot continued in the third chukker, too as both the teams banged home thrice as the winners came out with 10 1/2-9 lead.

Asif scored two field goals while Cuitino fired his fifth goal. The struggling Godara pumped in three.

In the beginning of fourth chukker, Cuitino struck his sixth followed by fourth from Asif to surge ahead 12 1/2-9.

In the dying minutes Godara blasted his 10th goal but only to reduce the margin.

In the subsidiary final, five goals by Hissam Ali Hyder and three each by Faaiz Rahim Khan and Jota Chavanne propelled Bank Alfalah to third place beating Lindt Chocolate 11-7 ½ despite a valiant effort by Six-goal Diego Araya for the losers.

Sufi Muhammad Haris added a goal for the Lindt who had a ½-goal handicap.
