LAHORE, Feb 19: All eyes are now set on the promotion of senior police officers to BS-21 to fill in the five posts of additional IGs which have been approved by the finance department.

The posts have been created for Lahore, Multan, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad and the Punjab Constabulary in response to a summary sent by the Punjab police to the provincial government.

Four posts of DIGs, as many of SPs and the related staff have also been created under the plan according to which the additional IGs in the cities would be given two DIGs — one heading the investigation and the other operational wing.

The plan has been devised according to the Police Order 2002 which provided for the posting of an additional IG in a range or the capital city having more than 10,000 constables. The Punjab Constabulary has also been given an additional IG because it too has a force of more than 10,000 personnel.

“The promotion is expected early next month, and everybody eligible is preparing for it,” a senior police officer said here on Sunday.

He said officers of the second common group would be considered for promotion in addition to eight others of their seniors whose promotion was earlier deferred for various reasons.

The senior most officer in the second common is stated to be Javaid Akhtar who is in Saudi Arabia. He is reportedly followed by DIG (establishment) Asrar Ahmad.

The others include Police Academy deputy commandant Ejaz Akram, Lahore DIG Khwaja Khalid Farooq, DIG Tahir Arif (Islamabad), DIG Tele Mohammad Waseem, Sihala Police School commandant Mirza Mohammad Ali, Faisalabad DIG Talat Mahmood, DIG training Fayyaz Mir and FIA director Mirza Yasin.

Sources said Punjab had some junior DIGs working as OSDs like Tehsin Shah, Chaudhry Sajjad and Abdul Majeed. And they could be posted as DIGs against the newly-created posts.
