Golf: Sabbatini leads by four over Levet and Barlow

LOS ANGELES, Feb 18: South Africa’s Rory Sabbatini surged into the lead at the Nissan Open on Friday, firing a second-round 65 for a four-shot edge over France’s Thomas Levet and Craig Barlow.

Sabbatini reached the halfway stage of the 5.1 million-dollar event with a 10-under total of 132.

Barlow carded a 69 and Levet a 68 to share second on six-under 136.

Sabbatini, who played early Friday morning, ran off five consecutive birdies and shot a 32 on the front side of the par-71 Riviera Country Club.

Tiger Woods continued to struggle on the course he played his first PGA Tour event. Woods began the day two-under and started the day on the 10th tee. He made a birdie on his third hole, but made back to back bogeys on the next two. He finished with back-to-back bogeys at eight and nine.

Woods’s three-over 74 saw him make the cut right on the number at one-over 143. South African Ernie Els made the cut with one stroke to spare, carding a 72 for 142.

THAMMANOON LEADS

KUALA LUMPUR: Thailand’s Thammanoon Srirot edged into the lead on Saturday at the US$1.25m Maybank Malaysian Open, which has been reduced to a 54-hole tournament due to bad weather.

The Asian Tour stalwart rolled in a 30-foot birdie putt on his first hole of the third round at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club to lead on 13-under-par before play was abandoned for the day due to lightning.

With more bad weather forecast, organisers announced the championship, jointly sanctioned by the Asian Tour and European Tour, will be decided over three rounds, with players resuming their third and final rounds Sunday.

Two-time defending champion Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand is very much in the hunt for a historic third straight victory in Malaysia as he is tied second at 12-under with halfway leader David Park of Wales, who bogeyed the only hole he managed to play today.

England’s Mark Foster was one of the few players ruing the suspension of play as he charged out from the blocks with two birdies and one eagle through his opening five holes to be tied for fourth at 11-under alongside compatriot John Bickerton.

Thammanoon, a five-time winner in Asia, made the most of Park’s bogey on the first when he rammed home a lengthy putt on the first hole.

Thongchai, looking to become the first player to win the same event three times in a row on the Asian Tour and the first Asian to do so on the European Tour, said the storms has not affected his concentration at all.

Park, bidding for his second European Tour win, missed the green on the first hole and failed to save par from four feet before the siren blew for players to return to the clubhouse. But the Welshman was unperturbed of his minor slip-up.

Third round scores

-13: Thammanoon Srirot through 1 hole

-12: David Park through 5 holes, Thongchai Jaidee through 1 hole

-11: Mark Foster through 5 holes, John Bickerton through 1 hole

-10: Marcus Fraser through 6 holes, Raphael Jacquelin through 5 holes, Gary Murphy through 2 holes, Charlie Wi through 2 holes, Gary Simpson through 2 holes, Francesco Molinari through 1 hole, Soren Kjeldsen through 1 hole.—Agencies
