KARACHI: ATC again issues warrants against Bugti’s grandson


KARACHI, Feb 18: An anti-terrorism court in Karachi on Saturday repeated non-bailable warrants against grandson of Bugti tribal chief Nawab Akbar Bugti and others in the PIDC building blast case.

Sardar Brahim Dakh and Abdul Hameed were named as absconding co-accused in case along with arrested Abdul Aziz Baloch and Mangla Khan, stated to be affiliated with anti-state organization.

The prosecution alleged that the absconding co-accused Sardar Brahim Dakh gave the task to Aziz Khan, Mengla Khan and absconding accused Abdul Hameed for executing bomb blast outside PPL office as jobs were not being given to their people.

The arrested accused, who were identified by witnesses in an identification parade before a magistrate, had also confessed to have committed the crime before judicial magistrate South Karachi on Dec 5.

The court was told that the accused could not be arrested as they have fled from their houses.

ATC, headed by Judge Haq Nawaz Baloch, repeating NBWs against the accused, ordered the investigation officer to submit final report regarding arrest warrants and adjourned the hearing for Feb 28.

Meanwhile, the same court adjourned the hearing of a kidnapping and killing trial against three accused after deposition by prosecution witness.

Abdul Asif, Atif Khan and Rizwan Ahmed are charged with kidnapping Qazi Munibul Haq, 21, for ransom and later killing him on failure to get the ransom amount on Oct 10 last.

The accused denied charges.

Prosecution witness Dr Sardar Khanzada, a MLO who conducted autopsy of the victim, recorded his statement before the court. The hearing of the trial is now fixed for Feb 22.

According to the prosecution, accused kidnapped abductee from Gulshan-i-Maymar and kept him hostage at the house of accused Rizwan in Hyderabad and demanded Rs1 million from family members of the abductee for his release.

After failure in negotiations for ransom with the family of the victim, the accused killed the victim.

BIBLE SOCIETY BLAST: An anti-terrorism court in Karachi on Saturday adjourned the hearing of a trial against four activists of the banned Jundullah in Pakistan Bible society blast case after deposition of prosecution witnesses.

Ataur Rehman, Shahzad Bajwa, Shahzad Mukhatar and Rao Khalid are charged with throwing hand-grenade in front of Pakistan Bible Society in Saddar area Karachi and planting a bomb in Suzuki hi-roof on Jan 15, 2004.

Thirteen policemen, including a DSP and SP, were injured in this attack.

Prosecution witnesses Hamid Mangi and sub-inspector Kashif Jalal of bomb disposal unit, who made report of blast, were examined before the court.

SI Kashif submitted that five to six kilograms of explosive was used in the locally-made bomb. Witnesses were cross-examined by defence counsel M R Syed and Mushtaq Ahmed.

ATC, headed by Judge Feroz Mehmood Bhatti, after examination of witnesses fixed Feb 21, for the next hearing.

Meanwhile, ATC headed by Judge Ghulam Ali Samtio, adjourned the hearing of trial against man in kidnapping for ransom case after statement of prosecution witness.

Athar Naeem, with other absconding co-accused, is charged with kidnapping Dr Oam Parkash for ransom from Boat Basin area Karachi on June 6, 2004.

Prosecution witness sub-inspector Ali Mohammad, who seized vehicle used in kidnapping of abductee and detected telephonic calls made for demanding ransom, was examined before the court.

The court, after examination of witness, adjourned hearing till Feb 22.

Pearl case: The counsel for Mohammad Hashim, one out of five proclaimed offenders arrested by the police in a kidnapping and killing conspiracy case of US journalist Daniel Pearl, on Saturday sought medical report of his client who is stated to be a liver patient.

The application was moved by his counsel Mohammad Amir before an anti- terrorism court in Karachi seeking medical report of Hashim and permission for his treatment by private sources.

The counsel submitted that the brother and family of the accused were not satisfied with the medical treatment given by the jail authorities and prayed the court to call his medical report to ascertain whether he can be treated by a physician. The next hearing of trial has been fixed for March 4.—PPI
