Skiing: Clean sweep by PAF

ISLAMABAD, Feb 17: PAF skiers dominated the first day’s proceedings of the final round of 14th National ski championship began at Naltar (Gilgit) on Friday with over 60 skiers participating in this winter sport competition.

On the first day, Super “G” event was staged in which all three medals gold, silver and bronze were grabbed by PAF skiers.

Sher Afzal landed the gold medal with a timing of 22.5 seconds, Waseem Abbas took silver with 22.25sec and Muhammad Abbas claimed bronze medal with 22.87sec.

The Shah Khan Cup among junior skiers is also being held simultaneously alongwith 14th championship.

The contest is being held in three categories of Alpine skiing Slalom, Giant Slalom and Super “G”.

All Ski Associations of Pakistan including Sindh, NWFP, Punjab, Baluchistan, Islamabad, Northern Areas, Adventure Foundation, Pakistan Army, Pakistan Navy and PAF have fielded their skiers for the final round.

It is expected that last year’s Gold Medalists Muhammad Abbas and Sher Afzal of PAF will face tough competition from Army skiers, Sepoy Muhammad Iqbal and Sepoy Deen Muhammad.

The Shah Khan Cup-2006 is being contested amongst upcoming junior skiers of Northern Areas and other ski associations.—APP
