Shock defeat for Sania
BANGALORE (India), Feb 15: Camille Pin of France pulled off a major upset at the 175,000-dollar WTA Bangalore Open when she ousted top-seeded Indian Sania Mirza in the second round on Wednesday.
Second-seeded Shahar Peer of Israel also crashed out of the tournament, losing 4-6, 2-6 to Italian Maria Camerin in the opening round.
Sania comfortably won the opening set, but then failed to continue the momentum against Pin, losing 6-1, 5-7, 2-6.
Pin recovered and fought back to take the second set before breaking the Indian twice in the third to wrap up the match.
Unseeded players Ukraine’s Alona Bondarenko, Vania King of the United States and Hungarian Melinda Czink booked quarterfinal berths after winning in straight sets.
The 18-year-old Peer, who won her first career title last week in Thailand, lost in straight sets despite having an upper hand during the early stages of the match. She was leading 3-1 in the opening set.
Camerin, who threw her racquet hard on to the ground several times during the match, bounced back with powerful double-handed backstrokes to overcome a “mentally tired” Peer.
Kostanic, who lost to Peer at the Pattaya Open, was stretched by Austrian Daniela Kix in the first round before winning 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, while Maria Koryttseva was humbled by Czink 6-2, 6-2.
