Canal breach plugged

NAUSHAHRO FEROZE, Feb 15: Sindh Irrigation Secretary Ashfaq Memon visited the site of a breach in the Rohri canal near Kandiaro on Wednesday where the irrigation staff plugged the breach.

The chief engineer of irrigation, Mohammad Nawaz Memon, and the executive engineer of Rohri division, Jam Mitha, were present on the occasion.

The irrigation secretary directed officials of the department to plug the breach effectively and expedite disposal of water from affected areas.

When contacted, Jam Mitha said that on Monday morning water flow in the canal was 11,000 cusecs which decreased to only 2,000 cusecs after the breach.

He said that 10,000 cusecs of water was flowing on Wednesday afternoon, while an additional 1,000 cusecs would be released in the canal on Thursday.

The executive engineer claimed that he was present at the site with workers of the irrigation department and pump machines were draining out water from affected areas.

PROTEST: Activists of the PPP-SB took out a rally in Moro town on Wednesday to protest the arrest of party workers in Sindh.

The rally, led by Khalid Hussain Ahmed, reached at the press club where the participants of the rally observed a token hunger strike for one and a half hour.

The PPP-SB leaders complained that police have arrested over 60 party workers including Ghulam Rasool and Nadeem Hussain and demanded their early release.

JSQM: Activists of Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz observed a token hunger strike for two hours in Moro on Wednesday to protest the arrest of workers in different towns of Sindh.

Led by Ashraf Leghari, they complained that police have arrested several party workers including Zulfiqar and Mumtaz and also implicated them in false cases.

NOMINATION: Two candidates from the Jatoi group filed nomination forms for the seat of nazim UC Ghair Gajo.

Wednesday was the last date for filing nomination papers for by-election, but no rival group filed nomination.

This seat was vacated after resignation of UC nazim Sohail Akhtar Abbasi, who was elected taluka nazim of Bhirya.

Only two candidates Mohammad Nawaz Abbasi and his brother Abdul Waheed Abbasi of Jatoi group filed their nomination forms.

ARREST: Alleged bandit Ali Thebo has been killed in a police encounter and two others have been arrested in the Tando Masti police area.
