LAKKI MARWAT, Feb 14: Students of the Government Post-Graduate College on Tuesday blocked the Lakki-Mianwali Road connecting the NWFP with Punjab to protest against the publication of blasphemous cartoons of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) in several European newspapers.

The protesters led by students’ leaders took out a rally from the college. After marching on the Lakki-Tajazai Road they reached the Kargil Chowk where they were joined by other students.

The students of the state-run high schools of the city also participated in the rally. They carried placards and banners inscribed with anti-US and anti-Europe slogans. They also burnt the Danish flag.

They staged a sit-in on the Lakki-Mianwali Road and blocked it for all kinds of vehicular traffic.

The students leaders, including general-secretary of Twig Literary Organisation Tariq Usman Saeed Khan Marwat, Mohammad Jibran Sanan, Aftab Ahmad Khan, Mohammad Shafiq, Mohammad Ibrahim and Mohammad Zahir called upon the government to sever diplomatic as well as trade ties with European countries involved in the act.

“The rulers of countries and the editors of newspapers involved in mocking the Holy Prophet (PBUH) should apologise to the Muslim community before the electronic media,” they demanded.

MARDAN: District Council Mardan, Tehsil Mardan, Tehsil Takhtbai, traders, teachers, minorities, women of various organizations and political and religious parties held a protest meeting at the Town Hall here on Tuesday to condemn the publication of sacrilegious cartoons of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

The meeting was attended by District Nazim Himaytullah Mayar and others.

They demanded the government to sever both economic and diplomatic ties with the countries involved in caricaturing the character of Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

They said that both Europe and the USA were playing with the sentiments of Muslims the world over, which would destroy peace of the world.

The meeting unanimously passed a resolution condemning the newspapers which published the cartoons and demanded the government to cut ties with Denmark, Norway, France and other European countries.

Later, the participants, who were joined by college and school students, led out a protest rally and held a public meeting at the District Courts Chowk. Students broke and torched signboards of Telenor fixed on various shops and offices.
