Rickety buses to be removed

By Our Correspondent

GILGIT, Feb 14: The regional transport authority of the Northern Areas has decided to revamp the transportation system on the Karakoram Highway by disbanding rickety buses on the route.

Regional Transport Secretary Dr Imran Afzal Cheema said the owners and operators’ of buses had been asked to replace their old fleet and ply new buses equipped with all facilities, after receiving numerous complaints from the public.

Dr Cheema said the conductors and drivers of the buses would be trained in providing first aid and explosive and mine detection to ward off any eventuality.

The plan has been chalked out in collaboration with police.

The load of baggage carried by the buses on long routes would also be monitored to check overloading, the secretary added.
