Tennis: Khalid, Nomi in semis
KARACHI, Feb 13: Second seed Khalid Ali Nazar and fourth seed Nomi Qamar cruised into the men’s singles semifinals of the Open tennis championship after winning their matches in contrasting styles at the Karachi Gymkhana on Monday.
While Khalid struggled to overcome Rizwan Shamsi 1-6, 7-5, 6-4, Nomi had an easy 6-2, 6-4 sailing over Manzer. The semifinals line-up will be completed on Tuesday after Aqeel Khan and his younger brother Yasir Khan play their second and third round matches.
The two who are due to return from Chinese Taipei late Monday night, got a bye in the first round.
Reigning national hard court champion, Seher Khwaja, subdued Roomasa Channa 6-0, 6-1 to make her entry into the last four.
She now faces Eman Malik who got the better of Alia Hai by the identical score line.
In the other match, Hira Channa accounted for Ruqaya 6-0, 6-0 to sail into the semis where she meets Michiko who got a walk over against Alay Zehra.
Ruqaya had replaced Mariam Rahim as the latter pulled out at the last moment after submission of entry.
The juniors U-17 singles has reached the quarterfinal stage. Those who have booked a berth includes top seed Nasir Mushtaq, second seed Ghulam Abbas, third seed Mateen Arif, fourth seed Abbas Raza, Zuhair, Jahangir Rashid, Sarmad Munir and Salman Ahmed.

Men’s doubles (first round): Danish-Aamir bt Zuhaib-Jaffar 6-1, 6-0, Nomi-Asad bt Mubasshir-Abbas Raza 6-1, 6-1.
