BAHAWALPUR, Feb 13: Islamia University students, protesting against the killing of their fellow by three dacoits near the Baghdad railway station, blocked the DIG Police Chowk, disrupted traffic, boycotted their classes and forced the shopkeepers to put their shutters down here on Monday.
Tauseef Younas along with two class fellows was going to the hostel by a motorcycle-rickshaw. As they crossed the Baghdadul Jadid railway station, three armed men intercepted them near Chak 9-BC. When Younas asked the driver not to stop the rickshaw, one of the interceptors opened fire. Younas sustained bullet injuries and was taken to the Bahawal Victoria Hospital where he died.
Following his death, scores of university students who had reached the hospital, marched on Circular Road and reached the DIG Police Chowk where they blocked traffic for one hour.
DPO Arif Nawaz appeared on the scene and assured them that the killers would be arrested soon. He also announced that a police post would be set up on the Baghdadul Jadid campus.
Later, the students returned to the old campus and locked the main gates of the university. Even they did not allow the buses carrying students to enter the campuses. They also boycotted their classes.
In the afternoon, the protesting students gathered at the Bahawal Victoria Hospital’s main administrative block and protested against the alleged negligence of the duty staff. They said if the injured student was provided proper treatment, his life could be saved.
Later, the students reached the MS’s office and blocked traffic by parking university buses on both the roads passing through the hospital and forced the medical stores in front of the hospital to put their shutters down.
MS Dr Fazal Mahmood came out of his office and issued suspension from service orders of duty doctor Sagheer besides taking into possession of the entire record of the emergency treatment given to the student. He also formed a 16-member inquiry committee and asked it to submit its report within 48 hours.
Police have registered a murder case against three unidentified people.
RAPE CASE: Yazman police on Monday registered a rape case against four people.
