SUKKUR, Feb 13: In view of recurring violence in the Sukkur central jail-I, the Sindh IG prison and an inspection team of the Sindh chief minister visited the jail. On February 7, prisoners had taken control of the jail and made five jail officials hostage.
Sindh Prison IG Ayaz Mughni and members of the team Mushtaq Ahmed Khan, Hussain Shah Bukhari, Farooq Amin, and Manzoor Awan visited the jail.
The acting DIG prison Abdul Majeed Siddiqui and DIG Prison Nawaz Hussain also accompanied the IGP. The official went round the jail and saw the places where the prisoners had broken the barracks and walls.
He was given a briefing by jail superintendent Gulzar Channa about the incidents which took place on February 7. The superintendent said the jail was spread over the vast area of 40 acres thus was difficult to control.
He suggested it should be divided into two portions. He said due to shortage of jail police, it was difficult to control such a large number of prisoners. He said the building of jail, barracks, the main wall, doors and windows were in vulnerable condition and require immediate repairs for which ample funds were needed.
He said salaries and other fringe benefits were quite insufficient and suggested to bring it at par with those of Punjab police. The team will also visit the central jail-I and II to review the situation.
