Henriques fires Aussies into U-19 World Cup semis

COLOMBO, Feb 11: Skipper Moises Henriques gave a superb all-round performance as Australia stormed into the semifinals of the ICC Under-19 World Cup cricket tournament with a nine-wicket win over Sri Lanka on Saturday.

Fast bowler Henriques bagged 4-22 to restrict the hosts to a modest 177 in the 50-over match and then slammed an impressive 79 not out, which included six sixes, to help Australia sail to the target for the loss of just one wicket.

He put on 146 for the unfinished second wicket with opener Tom Cooper, who scored an unbeaten 84 with 14 fours.

Dilhan Corray (43) and Shalika Karunanayake (36 not out) were the main scorers for Sri Lanka.

Australia will now face Pakistan, who defeated Zimbabwe by five wickets in another quarterfinal.

All-rounder Riaz Kail was the star performer in the Pakistan win, taking four wickets and hitting an unbeaten 26.

India will meet England in the other semifinal.

England defeated Bangladesh by five wickets, while India thrashed the West Indies by 126 runs.

Opener Cheteshwar Pujara scored a solid 94 for India, who posted 284-9 before dismissing the West Indies for 158.

Pujara added 110 for the opening wicket with Gaurav Dhiman (77) to put India on course for a big total. Rohit Sharma (50) was the other main contributor.

Fast bowler Javon Searles took 6-68 for the West Indies.

West Indies failed to cope with Indian seamers Vijaykumar Yomahesh (4-25) and Man-of-the-Match Dhiman (3-27) and were all out in the 39th over.

Opener Andre Fletcher top-scored for the West Indies with 44.

England surpassed Bangladesh’s total of 155 with more than six overs to spare, with Varun Chopra (40) and Mark Nelson (32) being the main run-getters.

England seamer Stevan Mullaney bagged three wickets and left-arm spinner Graeme White conceded just 11 runs in 10 overs to restrict Bangladesh.
