Hungary’s first woman champion dies

BUDAPEST, Feb 11: The first Hungarian woman to win Olympic gold, 1936 high jump champion Ibolya Csak, has died at the age of 91, the Hungarian Athletics Association said on Friday.

Csak, who could be seen in the stands at athletics meetings until quite recently, died from complications following a fall.

Csak won the high jump at the Berlin Games in one of the tightest competitions in the event when three athletes cleared 160 centimetres but all failed at 162. The rules at the time required a fourth jump and only Csak cleared, giving her the gold.—Reuters
