Sher-i-Gujrat to make amends today

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Feb 11: A ticklish card of eight-events has been drawn up for the equine connoisseurs when the 24th Lahore winter Meeting gets under way at the Racecourse on Sunday.

The events will be held, two over 1100m, three each over 1200m and 1300m. In all, 86 horses will be taking part in the races barring last-minute withdrawals.

The contestants have been so tightly handicapped that winner-picking may prove a difficult task for the punters.

Three-year-old chestnut colt, Sher-i-Gujrat, who after winning a maiden race was beaten in open handicap race, will be all out to make amends in the supporting and seventh race.

This shapely colt, Sher-i-Gujrat is contesting in the Sheikhupura Plate class IV division II handicap race to be gone over the sprinting distance of 1200m.

Of the nine runners besides Sher-i-Gujrat, Ghazi Rifle and Key Guy Doll seems to be on chance.

The winner should be from them.

The feature event, the Sheikhupura Plate class IV division I, also to be run over 1200m, has eight contenders. On recent form, performance and handicap three attract attention.

They are: Pawan, Millennium Count and Brave Majesty. All three are speedy animals and relish the distance. If all on job this should be a closely contested race, the last in racing order.

Valentine, Sindbad and Lucky Coin are the pick of the eight runners drawn for the sixth race, the Sheikhupura Plate class IV division III to be gone over 1200m.

The Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards had on Sunday last suspended the rider of Lucky Coin for two months for unsatisfactory riding of his mount, if a good rider rides Lucky Coin should win the race.

However, though placed on top of the handicap Valentine may prove an upsetter.

Poly Love, River Dancer and Zardan look good in the fifth race to pick up a winner. If handicap is the decider they should finish in the same order.

The first, second, third and fourth races have three or more chance horses and they may provide thrills and shrills to the race-goers.

Meanwhile, the LRC stewards have warned off jockey Aamar Parvaiz for three months for his unsatisfactory riding on favourite Alexander Last Sunday.

Alexander, a forty to 1000 favourite had finished second behind Poly Dunit and after the race, his owner had complained to the LRC stewards that he was not satisfied with the handling of the colt by the jockey.

After examining the jockey and video-film of the race they ordered an inquiry.

The inquiry report certified the truth. The first race will be held at 12.00noon.
