Bank workers hold demo for raise in salary

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Feb 11: Hundreds of United Bank (UBL) employees staged a protest demonstration here to press the bank administration to improve their salary package and accept other demands.

The protest, organized by United Bank Officers and Employees Action Committee of Pakistan, was participated by union representatives from Lahore, Karachi, Quetta and Peshawar. The protesters were carrying banners and placards inscribed with statements against the bank administration, Industrial Relations Ordinance 2002, Banking Company Ordinance Section 27-B and Services Tribunal Act 2-A. They also raised slogans in favour of workers. “Long live labourers, officers unity,” they chanted.

The participants sought increase in pension of retired bank employees.

They complained that there was disparity in salaries of employees having the same qualifications and experience, claiming that those having affiliation with the administration were paid more. They also complained of not receiving any payment for their leaves that remained unavailed.

The protesters said the salaries of bank employees were revised every two years, but there had been no revision in their packages since 2001. “We should be given packages like the ones given to the employees of other banks,” a protester said.
