Gunbattle leaves 13 dead in Russia

MOSCOW, Feb 10: Ten gunmen and three police died after special forces stormed a house in southern Russia near Chechnya on Friday following a day-long standoff against heavily-armed gunmen, officials said.

“Ten fighters were killed, according to preliminary reports,” said a spokesman for the interior ministry in Stavropol region. “Three police were killed” when the siege began on Thursday, he said.

Interior ministry officials were quoted by Russian news agencies as saying the gunmen were preparing an attack in the area.—AFP
