Hockey trials to be held today


ISLAMABAD, Feb 7: The one-day trials to select the Pakistan team for the forthcoming hockey series against India will be held at Nasir Bunda Stadium, Pakistan Sports Complex, on Wednesday.

Pakistan hockey manager, former Olympian Saeed Khan, said on Tuesday that the national selection committee would be present in full strength to watch the trials which will start at 2.00pm.

Saeed is also the commandant of the camp now in progress here in preparation for the six-match home-and-away series against India.

Akhtar Rasool, who was the captain of the Pakistan team which won the 1982 World Cup at Bombay (India), is the chairman of national selectors while the other members of the selection committee are his fellow former Olympians Hassan Sardar, Manzoorul Hassan and Akhtarul Islam.

The first match of the series against India will be played at Jalandhar on Feb 16 while second and third matches will both be contested at Chandigarh on Feb 18 and 20.

On the Pakistan leg of the series, the first match will be played at Army Hockey Stadium, Rawalpindi, on Feb 22 to be followed by clashes at Faisalabad Hockey Stadium and National Hockey Stadium, Lahore, on Feb 24 and 26.

Asif Bajwa and Rana Mujahid Ali are the coaches of national hockey team.

Bajwa said almost all players including Rehan Butt and Mudassar Ali Khan were fully fit and looking forward to the trials and thence the series against India.

The following are the probables to appear at the trials: Nasir Ahmed (PIA), Zeeshan Ashraf, Adnan Maqsood, Imran Warsi, Tariq Aziz, Adnan Zakir and Akhtar Ali (NBP), Dilawar Hussain, Muhammad Javaid, Azhar Iqbal and Muhammad Imran (Pakistan Army), Salman Akbar, Sajjad Anwar, Muhammad Zubair, Waqas Vikki, Yasir Islam and Shakeel Abbasi (PTCL), Kashif Yaqoob (PAF), Rehan Butt, Mudassar Ali Khan, Waqas Sharif, Imran Khan Yousafzai, Mudassar Khan and Muhammad Shabbir (Wapda), Muhammad Saqlain (ABL), Ihsan Ullah and Imran Shah (Customs), Muhammad Attique (Pakistan Railways), Shabbir Khan (Sui Southern), Aamir Shahzad (POF).—APP
