Mob sets shops, vehicles on fire

By Our Staff Reporter

LAHORE, Feb 7: Police resorted to teargas to control an enraged mob which had set on fire some vehicles and shops and an old cinema in the South Cantonment area on Tuesday night.

The mob is said to have been protesting against alleged desecration of the Holy Quran in the village of Gohawa.

Police said they tried to calm down the protesters but they started pelting them with stones and set about 30 vehicles, 10 shops and an old cinema house on fire.

Some villagers and two police personnel suffered minor injuries.

Police also said that they were trying to keep the area calm and holding negotiations with the villagers. A case has been registered against unidentified persons for the alleged act of sacrilege.
