COLOMBO, Feb 6: Pakistan waltzed to a convincing eight-wicket win over Uganda after dismissing their opponents for just 74 in Group ‘A’ of the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup on Monday.

They rattled off required runs in just over 12 overs, with Nasir Jamshed (35 not out) and Ali Khan guiding them to victory at the P. Saravanamuttu Stadium.

The Ugandans faired poorly in their innings: only Raymond Otim with 13 and Emmanuel Isaanez with 10 made it into double figures, with extras top-scoring with 25.

The seamers did the damage for Pakistan, with Jamshed Ahmed and Akhtar Ayub both taking 3 for 15, while Sarfraz Ahmed, the Pakistan captain, took five catches behind the stumps.

Uganda have little time to lick their wounds as they face New Zealand on Tuesday, while Pakistan’s next match is against Bangladesh on Wednesday.

The USA were given a harsh introduction to World Cup as West Indies, led by William Perkins’s 133, reached imposing total of 302 for seven in Group ‘B’ match.

Perkins and Jason Mohammad (45) added 124 for third wicket, before being joined by Gajanand Singh (65) with whom he put on a further 131 as USA bowlers toiled in heat.

Perkins hit 16 fours in his innings, which spanned two minutes short of three hours, an impressive effort in roasting conditions.

Dominic Audain had earlier rocked West Indies with two quick wickets, and ended with 2 for 39 from six overs.

Namibia’s Dawid Botha led his side to respectability against India with a fine knock of 61 in Group ‘C’ match.

Botha and Henno Prinsloo helped Namibia recover from a shaky start when they were reduced to 44 for three by a combination of pace and spin.

Although Namibia’s eventual total of 170 is more than reasonable, it ought not to prove too big a hurdle for India.

Nepal gave a good account of themselves in their opening match of Group ‘D’ against England, restricting them to 209 in their 50 overs, at same ground on which Australia piled up 316 for nine on Sunday.

Although five of England’s top six batsmen reached double figures, only Moeen Ali, the captain, reached a half-century, making 54 from 82 balls with three fours and two sixes.
